Charlie Hunter played Gilly’s in Dayton, Oh last night, and will be in Cincinnati on Friday.

When you first see Charlie Hunter sit down to play his guitar at one of his shows, the first thing you notice is the instrument he plays.  Hunter plays a very unique guitar. The custom-made seven and eight-string guitars are the catalyst for a guy that simultaneously plays rhythm guitar, basslines, and solos.  To see this musician hone this remarkable style and present an over the top performance through impeccable technique is beyond description. Wednesday night the wonderful people at Cityfolk.org, a professional presenter of traditional and ethnic performing arts in Dayton area, brought Charlie Hunter’s trio to Gilly’s for an intimate performance.  Charlie has released a total of 17 albums, and is on fall tour in support of his recent release, Public Domain. The album was recorded live with no editing at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn.  In addition, another interesting aspect of Public Domain is that all the songs were handpicked by Charlie’s Grandfather.  On the road supporting the album, Charlie will occasionally mix up which musicians he brings to play with him.  During this stop of the tour, Hunter brought two musicians with him to round out the trio.  Drummer Erik Kalb is a genius and is well-known for his days in Deep Banana Blackout, and more recently the Greyboy Allstars.  Michael R. Williams on bass trumpet lays down an enjoyable funky horn flair that blends so well with this trio.

The Charlie Hunter trio continues their tour tonight with a stop in Michigan.  But on Friday night, at Stanley’s Pub in the Columbia-Tusculum East End area, Cincinnati residents will have their opportunity to witness this amazing group of musicians deliver their remarkable sounds.
