Garaj Mahal's 7th album More Mr. Nice Guy

In most situations, when describing the sound of a particular band to someone who has never heard them, specific genres and similar bands are used to start the description.  In most situations, this approach can deliver reasonable results when trying to capture the essence of a band’s sound.  However, using this method to describe the internationally acclaimed band Garaj Mahal, there is pervasive trepidation in taking on such a task.  Coupled with the fact Garaj Mahal must be experienced first hand to truly appreciate what this impressive band is capable of, we can only hope our interpretation of these four musicians can provide a brief glimpse into their music.  The layers of funk laden jazz that is interwoven with Middle Eastern influenced landscapes provides the backbone and background of this quartet.  One of the dynamics of a Garaj Mahal performance is the band’s ability to take listeners on a musical ride to the heart of Middle Eastern dance party,  and in the blink of an eye whisk you off to a funky jazz bar in the heart of New Orleans.  The band’s prolific members approach their vast musical influences with technical prowess, combining their individual sounds to create a very intricate web of layered music.

The members of Garaj Mahal are well-respected musicians that each take their musical craft to elevated levels.  Named “2009 Best World Guitarist” by Guitar Player Magazine, Fareed Haque is one of the founding members of Garaj Mahal.  Fareed Haque is also a professor of Jazz and Classical Guitar Studies at Northern Illinois University.    Kai Eckhardt is a German born bassist that provides a solid jazz inspired funk backbone to Garaj Mahal’s overall sound.  Kai is also a professor at the Jazz School Institute in Berkeley, CA and brings his knowledge to bass clinics and workshops world-wide.  Eric Levy, who takes the reins on the keys, is a former student of Fareed Haque at Northern Illinois University.  Eric’s classical and jazz influenced styles blend seamlessly with his “Guitar-esque” approach to playing the keyboard.  Providing the solid beat and leading the team through songs on the drums is Sean Rickman.  Sean Rickman is the son of veteran guitarist Phil Upchurch and is a self-taught singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer.  Not only does Sean play the drums in the band, he is also Garaj Mahal’s lead singer.

The men of Garaj Mahal are currently on tour in support of More Mr. Nice Guy, their 7th album to date.  More Mr. Nice Guy is Garaj Mahal’s first album to feature Sean Rickman on the drums.  Released on March 9, 2010, More Mr. Nice Guy continues to impress fans and critics alike.  Since their inception in 2000, Garaj Mahal is known to push the limits of listeners expectations by always releasing and performing diverse and continually evolving songs.  With the release of More Mr. Nice Guy, it is quite apparent that the quartet still lives up to its reputation.  More Mr Nice Guy is a mix of Eastern Influences, hard-hitting jazz, funky dark grooves, New Orleans flair, and Garaj Mahal’s own interpretation of vast musical influences.  More Mr. Nice Guy lives up to expectations and is a must in every music collection.  (*Information on purchasing More Mr. Nice Guy can be found here)

Garaj Mahal is set to visit downtown Cincinnati on October 28th at the historical Blue Wisp Jazz bar.  Known for its intimate musical setting, the Blue Wisp provides the perfect backdrop to witness this world-renowned quartet.  The Noble Visions, The Blue Wisp and Garaj Mahal have teamed up to give our readers the opportunity to win a set of two tickets to next Thursday’s show.  For information about the show and how to enter the contest to win tickets, please see below.
