Trampled by Turtles 3/25/10 Southgate House

Hailing from Duluth, Mn, Trampled by Turtles exceeds all expectations when you attend one of their energy filled concerts.  The quintet is composed of Dave Simonett ~ vocals, guitar, Tim Saxhaug ~ bass, vocals, Dave Carroll ~ banjo, vocals, Erik Berry ~ mandolin, vocals, and Ryan Young ~ fiddle. (Read our pre-show article about Trampled by Turtles here)  Once a Trampled by Turtles show begins the listener can quickly gather that there are two driving forces behind this quintet.  Dave Simonett is the band’s songwriter, and his ability to craft lyrics that tell a story in each song, is the foundation on which this band thrives.  In addition, it is the Charlie Daniels-esque playing style of Ryan Young on the fiddle that is the musical treat of seeing a Trampled by Turtles show.  Each member of the band brings a unique aspect to the overall composition of the songs.  Tim Saxhaug on the bass plays as if he was the bass drum of the outfit, with Erik Berry on the mandolin acting as the high-hat in a sense.  Dave Carroll on the banjo is the icing on the cake in this group of musicians.  Bring all these aspects together and you have a recipe for good old dancing music that is Trampled by Turtles.  The band is known for their uptempo infectious playing style fueled by the excitement and elation of the fans at the show.  The band played a complete set till about midnight and had the crowd in the ballroom of the Southgate House bouncing off the walls.
