Gov’t Mule played Taft Theater on Friday night in support their first album in three years.

Gov’t Mule played to a sold out house at the Taft theater in Cincinnati on Friday in support of their first studio album in three years.  “By a Thread” is the name of the new album.  Warren Haynes, lead guitarist for Gov’t Mule played an in studio session earlier in the day at WNKU’s studios.  During the interview Warren hinted at a possible appearance of Cincinnati resident Peter Frampton.

As the crowd braved the bitter cold and slowly made their way into the historic Taft theater, the anticipation of the show could be felt by the anxious crowd.  As people made their way to their seats, some decided to check out the booth the The Music Resource Center of Cincinnati had set up.  MRC was raffling off a Warren Haynes/Peter Frampton signed guitar to raise money for the organization.  One lucky winner was going to go home with the ultimate souvenir.  We bought our ticket and hoped for the best.

We made our way down to the edge of the stage to get our camera gear ready.  As we got set up, the interaction of the fans settling into their seats was at a fever pitch.  You could see a group of long time friends who hadn’t seen on another for years catch up and talk about what was in store for the night.  As everyone was enjoying themselves the house lights went down.  Gov’t Mule took the stage.

Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule - Taft Theater 1/29/10

They started the evening with a slow subtle intro into Blind Man in the Dark from the 1998 album Dose.  This was a great start to the evening.  The tempo grew and you could tell the band was ready to deliver a great show.  The next was Mr High and Mighty off the same titled 2006 album.  The thunderous beginning of this song is an aggressive one that reminds you what Gov’t Mule is all about.  They decided to dive into material from the new album for the next 3 songs.  Steppin Lightly was next and is the second song on the new album.  This was the first time I have had the opportunity to see this live. Staying with the new album, Inside Outside Woman Blues #3 made an appearance.  They immediately went into the dark and growling Broke Down of the Brazos.  This was a treat and the crowd was feeding off the energy.  Next was a song off of the first album that Mule did with original bassist Allen Woody.  Rocking Horse brought cheers and applause from the crowd.  Then we were in for a ride with a rocking Thorazine Shuffle.  As Thorazine wrapped up Warren Haynes welcomed their good friend Peter Frampton to the stage for a couple songs.  First they played Albert King’s Feel Like Breaking Up Sombody’s Home.  Then for the last song of the first set we were all in for a surprise when we heard the first notes of George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps.  Watching Peter and Warren play off of one another was a treat for any music lover.

As the house lights came on for setbreak, people found their way outside for a breath of fresh air, as the Taft started to get extremely hot.  As everyone grabbed another drink and used the facilities the energy in the air could be felt from the incredible first set that had been delivered.  We were ready for the second set to send us into the evening.

What a second set we got.  It was a great evening and special one at that.
